Cookie Policy

Last updated: June 30, 2026

1. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. They allow the website (or third-party services embedded in it) to remember information about your visit, such as your preferences or login state.

There are two main types: session cookies (deleted when you close your browser) and persistent cookies (remain on your device until they expire or you delete them).

This policy also covers similar technologies including web beacons, pixels, and browser local storage, which can be used to track or store information in ways similar to cookies.

2. How We Obtain Consent

When you first visit this Site, a cookie consent banner appears. You have two choices:

  • Accept All — enables analytics and personalized advertising cookies in addition to strictly necessary local storage.
  • Necessary Only — disables analytics and advertising cookies. Ads may still appear but will not be personalized (non-interest-based).

Your choice is stored in your browser's localStorage (not in a cookie) under the key cse_consent. This data never leaves your device. You can change your choice at any time by clicking "Manage Cookies" in our website footer.

We implement Google Consent Mode v2. Before consent is granted, the Google AdSense script is not loaded at all — no advertising cookies are set, and no advertising network requests are made. After consent is granted (or "Necessary Only" is selected), the script loads and Google respects the consent signals we transmit via Consent Mode v2.

3. Cookies and Trackers We Use

We use three categories of cookies/trackers:

Category 1 — Strictly Necessary (no consent required)

Name / KeyTypeProviderPurposeDuration
cse_consent localStorage key This Site Stores your cookie consent choice ("full" or "necessary") so the banner is not shown on every visit. Required to honor your preference. Until cleared by user

Note: cse_consent is stored in browser localStorage, not as a cookie. It is processed entirely on your device and never transmitted to our servers.

Category 2 — Analytics (consent required)

Set only after you select "Accept All." These help us understand how visitors use the Site (aggregate page views, session duration, geographic region). No personally identifiable information is stored.

NameTypeProviderPurposeDuration
_ga Cookie Google Analytics Distinguishes unique users by assigning a randomly generated number as a client identifier. 2 years
_ga_* Cookie Google Analytics 4 Stores and counts page views; maintains session state for GA4 measurement. 2 years
_gid Cookie Google Analytics Distinguishes users; used to throttle request rate. 24 hours
_gat Cookie Google Analytics Throttles the request rate when using Google Tag Manager. 1 minute

IP addresses are anonymized before transmission to Google. Google acts as a data processor under a Data Processing Amendment. You can opt out of Google Analytics at any time by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Category 3 — Advertising (consent required)

Loaded by Google AdSense only after you select "Accept All." If you select "Necessary Only," the AdSense script still loads (to serve contextual non-personalized ads) but all consent signals are set to "denied" via Google Consent Mode v2, preventing interest-based profiling.

NameTypeProviderPurposeDuration
IDE Cookie Google / DoubleClick Used to register and report user interactions with ads to measure their effectiveness and present relevant ads. 1–2 years
NID Cookie Google Registers a unique ID that identifies a returning user's device for advertising personalization. 6 months
DSID Cookie Google / DoubleClick Used to identify a signed-in Google user when they interact with an ad, to inhibit duplicate conversions. 2 weeks
1P_JAR Cookie Google Collects site statistics and tracks conversion rates. 1 month
test_cookie Cookie Google / DoubleClick Checks whether the user's browser accepts cookies. Session
AID, TAID Cookie Google Links your activity across devices if you've previously signed in to your Google Account on another device. 13–14 months

The cookies listed above are examples of cookies Google may set. Google's advertising cookie behavior changes over time. For the most current information, see Google's advertising cookie information and Google's cookie policy.

4. Third-Party Connections That Are Not Cookies

Google Fonts

This Site uses Google Fonts to display typography. When your browser loads a page, it makes a direct request to Google's font CDN servers (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com). This request includes your IP address and browser information, which Google may process in accordance with its privacy policy. This connection occurs on every page load, regardless of your cookie consent choice, because it is necessary to display the site correctly.

If you wish to prevent this, you can use a browser extension that blocks Google Fonts, or configure your browser to block requests to Google's font domains.

5. Google Consent Mode v2

We implement Google Consent Mode v2, which communicates your consent choices directly to Google's advertising and analytics systems before those systems initialize. The four consent signals we control are:

  • ad_storage — controls whether advertising cookies can be set
  • analytics_storage — controls whether analytics cookies can be set
  • ad_user_data — controls whether user data can be sent to Google for advertising
  • ad_personalization — controls whether personalized advertising can be enabled

When you select "Necessary Only," all four signals are set to denied. Google will then serve only contextual (non-personalized) ads and will not use your data for ad profiling. When you select "Accept All," all signals are set to granted.

Critical implementation note: The Google AdSense script is not loaded at all until after you make a consent choice. This means no AdSense cookies or network requests are initiated before consent is obtained, which is consistent with ePrivacy Directive and GDPR requirements.

6. How to Manage Your Cookie Preferences

6.1 Our Consent Banner

Click "Manage Cookies" in our website footer at any time to reopen the consent banner and change your preference. Your new choice takes effect immediately.

6.2 Browser Settings

You can control cookies directly through your browser. Most browsers allow you to view, delete, and block cookies:

  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Apple Safari
  • Microsoft Edge

Blocking all cookies may affect Site functionality. Our calculator tools, however, do not require any cookies to function.

6.3 Advertising Opt-Out Tools

  • Google Ad Settings — manage personalized advertising across all Google services
  • Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) Opt-Out — opt out from participating ad networks
  • Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) Opt-Out
  • Your Online Choices (EU)

7. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

Some browsers transmit a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal. Due to the lack of a consistent industry standard for DNT, our Site does not currently respond to DNT signals automatically.

We do honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal. If your browser transmits a GPC signal, we treat it as equivalent to selecting "Necessary Only" in our consent banner — disabling personalized advertising and analytics tracking. This fulfills opt-out requirements under the CCPA (California), TDPSA (Texas), CPA (Colorado), CTDPA (Connecticut), and other applicable US state privacy laws.

8. Cookies Set by Calculator Tools

Our calculator tools themselves set no cookies and use no cookies. All calculation processing occurs in your browser (JavaScript). No form data is stored, transmitted, or logged. The calculator functionality works identically regardless of your cookie consent choice.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy as our technology, business practices, or applicable law changes. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and may reset your consent preference so that you are prompted to make a new choice. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
